Create a “Switch Between Windows” Shortcut in Windows 7

Since Windows Vista, Microsoft has added a flashy and more cool looking version of ALT-TAB aka window switching. It’s a 3D Aero animation. But unfortunately, the keyboard shortcut for this is the Windows Key + Tab. Needless to say this is an uncomfortable shortcut, which is why ALT-TAB is more frequently used.

But, you can create a shortcut that allows you to use this function with one click. Click below to read the whole thing.

Here is how you do it:

Create a new shortcut on your desktop.

Do this by - right-click -> New -> Shortcut.

In the location box the window that comes up copy & paste this:

C:\Windows\System32\rundll32.exe DwmApi #105

Name it something suitable like - “Switch between Windows”. Click OK/Finish.

This will create a new functional shortcut on your desktop. Now to make it more recognizable we need to change the icon.

Right click on shortcut -> Properties -> Change icon

In the “look for icons in this file” text box, copy & paste this:

C:\Windows\System32\imageres.dll

Hit Enter, and a whole bunch of icons will show up. Choose the first one.

Click OK. Now we have a proper icon to make it more recognizable.

But, having the icon on your desktop is not very useful. We need quick access to this function.
So we drag the icon to the taskbar to pin it.

Enjoy!
