Adventures of a study-free weekend

This Friday, I decided to clean the inside of my older desktop computer. My sister was complaining that it was making weird noises and it was annoying etc.

So, I took out the can of compressed air and a screwdriver. I open up one side of the case, and the amount of dust was unbelievable. I was like “HOLY SHIT!” and started to blow away all the dust using the compressed air.

After I was done clearing out all the visible dust. And this is where the story of a usually harmless computer cleaning sessions gets a twist.

I decided to take out the heat sink, to get rid of the dust inside. It was a stock Intel heat sink, and a POS at that. When I tried to put it back, the screws wouldn’t fit in properly. I started to get frustrated and in the process broke two of the bearings.

The next day I went to Canada Computers to get a new heat sink. It was a Arctic Cooling : Alpine 11 Pro. I went back home and put in the new fan. I started up the computer, only to have it automatically shutdown after 10 seconds.

Then I realized that yesterday when I took out the old heat sink, there was barely any thermal paste. So back to Canada Computers, bought some thermal compound; same brand name (MX-3). Went back home and it on the processor and put the heat sink back on. Voila! Computer is working fine again.

This was what happened this weekend.

P.S - Also got a new Razer gaming mouse. And thank god for Canada Computers. Also thanks to my friend Yiannis for telling me about Canada Computers. :)
